Just over four decades ago, the Shenzhen we know today didn’t exist. It was a small border town whose economy revolved around fishing and farming. Today, however, it is home to more than 18 million people. It ranks second in the world for the number of skyscrapers. And boasts one of the densest electronics ecosystems on the planet.
What you can see and experience in the city today looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. But how did such a radical evolution happen in such a short period of time? Join me as we explore Shenzhen before and after its extraordinary transformation.
An Economic Experiment
On China’s southern coast, there was once a quiet fishing village called Shenzhen. It had none of the population, infrastructure, or industrial base that we associate with the city today. But it had one extraordinary advantage: Hong Kong was right next door. Rather than seeing this border as a limitation, Deng Xiaoping saw an opportunity.
In 1980, as China embarked on its policy of reform and opening up, Shenzhen was designated as the country’s first Special Economic Zone. More flexible economic policies were introduced, turning the city into a gateway for attracting foreign investment, technology, and expertise. It was an experiment in opening China up to the world, and it worked.
Over the following years, investors, companies, and workers began arriving from all over China. Factories, roads, housing developments, offices, ports, and warehouses sprang up. By the mid-1990s, Shenzhen’s population had already surpassed three million.
Shenzhen wasn’t simply growing. It was being built from the ground up, and at an incredible pace.
Unlike older industrial cities, it had centuries of industrial history to preserve and no established economic structures holding it back. It could experiment, adapt, and replicate whatever worked elsewhere.
China’s Silicon Valley
The initial model was simple: investment came in, factories were built, products were manufactured, and those products were exported.
But factories need suppliers. Suppliers need components. And every component requires machinery, skilled workers, and technical expertise.
Little by little, something incredibly powerful emerged: one of the world’s densest technology and manufacturing ecosystems.
Thousands of companies became interconnected and concentrated in the same place, making it possible to take products from concept to mass production at remarkable speed.
Shenzhen Before and After
In Shenzhen, an entrepreneur can arrive with an idea, source the components they need, contact a manufacturer, and have a prototype ready within days.
The gap between an idea and a finished product becomes remarkably short.
In less than 40 years, Shenzhen transformed into a place where turning ideas into physical products could happen at a speed that is difficult to match anywhere else.
And Chinese companies weren’t content with manufacturing products for others. They began developing their own technologies and brands. Today, companies such as Huawei, DJI, and BYD, all headquartered in Shenzhen, are global leaders in telecommunications, drones, cameras, and electric vehicles.
The best way to understand just how far Shenzhen has come is to visit it yourself. I promise, it will surprise you. Here, drones fly over the streets delivering food. You can see driverless taxis moving through the city as if it were the most normal thing in the world. Skyscrapers seem to sprout like bamboo after a spring rain.
It feels like stepping into the future.
